How Long It Really Takes

This is one of the quickest wins in the whole house. A four year old pulling up a duvet is done in about a minute. A seven year old straightening sheets and sorting the pillows takes two or three. An eleven year old changing a full set of bedding takes closer to ten.

Those numbers are worth knowing when you set the reward, because children have a very good sense of fairness. A one minute job and a ten minute job earning the same amount is the fastest way to hear about it. Most families set bed making as a small daily quest and give sheet changing its own weekly quest at a higher value.

Use a Soft Deadline for School Mornings

Gold is not real money. It is the currency your child spends in the reward store you set up, so the right number is whatever makes the rewards feel reachable without being instant.

For this chore, somewhere around 3 to 10 Gold works well depending on how much you are asking for, and the table below has a starting point for each difficulty. The easiest way to sanity check it is to look at what your child is saving towards:

• At 7 Gold a day, a week of made beds comes to 49 Gold, which is about a backyard campout or a family volunteer day in the suggested rewards.
• Five days gets you to 35 Gold, roughly a gaming session.
• A fortnight lands near 100 Gold, which is trampoline park territory.
